People have many different reasons for not working to earn their keep. Some are unable because they are too young or disabled. Others do not work for religious reasons. A person may not work because he or she thinks someone else is going to take care of him. Hard feelings and resentment may then be the result for those who are doing all the work. Paul encourages us to each other accountable. We are to hold the idle person responsible. We should allow such a person to suffer the consequences of his actions. In the process, the idle person may realize the error of his way, repent, and become a vital part of the church. It is amazing how a few consequences will motivate a person to do the right thing. Paul encourages us not to tire in doing right. We may tire because we see other people prospering doing wrong. We may feel that doing right is not worth the effort. He encourages us to work hard so that others may follow our example and do the same. We are challenged to stay faithful, no matter what, until we die or Jesus returns. |
